Did he die a violent death in The Colosseum?

An orb & a ghastly face on the stairway
I visited Rome in April 2012 and was surprised to find this ghastly apparition in my Lumix camera.
This was taken in the morning of my Rome Walkabout Tour. The Colosseum is a monument well known not only as a battleground for gladiators and an icon to the magnificence, power and prestige of ancient Rome, but also for its cruelty.
I am wondering if this man in the picture was a gladiator, criminal or a Christian who met his violent end?
