The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern
This is our first fiction book review here on Moonslipper! We chose this book because it has magic, mystery, the paranormal and all the good things we love here at Moonslipper.
I was delighted to finally get my hands on The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern. A travelling circus, which appears without warning and leaves silently, endless tents, amazing reason-defying acts and dark and mysterious activities stretching over decades – perfect reading in my eyes!
It would be a brilliant book to bring on holidays at 528 pages but I chose to read a chapter (or three) at bedtime.
It was a real page turner and I couldn’t wait to read the next instalment every evening.
The main plot of the story is a deadly challenge between two magicians, Celia and Marco, only they are not your ordinary magicians, the magic they perform is completely real - there are no illusions. The challenge has been set up by two beings that can only be described as strange and elusive. There is a whole host of other interesting and extraordinary characters which all add to the story – they are wonderfully written and you feel you know them!
The circus itself is described with amazing detail – you can smell the caramel, popcorn and other exotic scents, you are completely immersed in wandering around the endless tents and gazing upon the many odd circus acts – all of which defy convention.
I don’t want to reveal any more of the storyline as I feel the great pleasure in most books is unravelling the plot chapter by chapter.
The one niggle I do have with this book is the timeline. Each chapter goes back and forth in time, which I found annoying. This is entirely personal and perhaps not every reader would feel as I did? I was reading two or three chapters each night and I would be flipping backwards and forwards as I picked up the book each time to read – which year and what characters was I reading about last?
It’s a very unique book and I can’t think of any other story like it which is an impressive feat indeed. I’m looking forward to either a sequel or something completely new from Erin Morgenstern. I really enjoyed The Night Circus!
